( he can't drink. he can't go out and kill someone. he could try and find a pretty face to blow off steam with. he does roll his eyes when the apology comes through but eventually, he comes around. of all the people that have wronged him, he can count the ones that apologized on one hand. )

We were on the same team. ( oh, shut up, it's in present tense in his head — not that she needs to be privy to it. ) You know how I feel. I draw the line at making a good time anything more than it was.

[ the sarcasm drips off like molasses, but she chooses to take it at face value. ignores the bitterness. it's easier that way. ]

she'd never been good at duplicity, but she could at least try. she'd tried to protect them both, in her own misguided way, and it hadn't worked. ]
